I am an independent artist, my studio serves as my workspace, my inventory space, my place for supplies as well as where I sleep and eat. I need to be available to rest as needed throughout my day while I work because of severe scoliosis. In addition, I paint with my feet because I was born without arms (amelia, phocomelia).
My studio is in the Walter Baker Lofts in the Dorchester area of Boston, Massachusetts. This historical building was the administration building for the Walter Baker Chocolate Factory but was renovated into artist live/workspaces. The Administration Building façade and external walls of the building remain as well as the architectural center of the space with a central open staircase and the historical “Chocolate Lady” painting at the top of the center staircase. This painting is a copy of the painting that inspired the original logo for Bakers Chocolate as the story goes. The Administration Building as well as other renovated factory buildings are located along the Neponset River. |
